HansonArch® Used for One of Largest Stormwater Retention Systems in Central Ohio

Hanson Pipe & Precast, a leader in the concrete products industry, recently provided the product for one of the largest stormwater retention arch systems in central Ohio. The $800 million Nationwide Children’s Hospital expansion in Columbus features a new stormwater detention system designed to ease the flow of large amounts of water from draining into the Columbus water system during periods of heavy rainfall. The detention basin will also supply irrigation water for the green space surrounding the hospital.

Working under contract to the construction manager, TurnerSmoot, George J Igel & Co selected Hanson Pipe & Precast to provide 420 feet (24’ span X 10’ Rise) or 52 pieces of 8 foot sections – of HansonArch® for the stormwater detention system. Each section was delivered in sequence and set onto footers, allowing the entire arch system to be delivered in two and a half days.

HansonArch® was chosen by George J Igel & Co., due to its durability, hydraulic capacity, structural integrity and Hanson’s ability to deliver the product when needed. The new detention system will store excess water runoff and drain the water into the existing system as permissible.

Richard Manning, president of Hanson Building Products North America said, “What Children’s is doing to enhance its facility, capabilities and convenience for its patients is exceptional.  Hanson is honored that our precast concrete products ensure that the hospital is safe in all conditions.”

Part of the $800 million Nationwide Children’s Hospital Project includes a $480 million hospital tower, with private patient rooms, a new emergency department and a hematology and marrow transplant unit among other amenities.

Hanson Pipe & Precast completed the stormwater retention arch system in late 2008. The Nationwide Children’s Hospital expansion is expected to open in 2012.
